Boston Dynamics Spot: what buyers actually pay — and who should

Spot is the quadruped everyone recognises and the purchase almost nobody prices correctly. The $74,500 figure still appears in news copy and forum threads. It was the June 2020 online Explorer kit price. Boston Dynamics no longer sells Spot that way, publishes no list price, and routes commercial buyers through a sales conversation.

This evaluation covers what configured units actually cost in public records, what the hardware and Orbit stack do, who deploys it, how police use has played out, and when a developer or industrial Chinese quadruped is the better buy. It is not a pet review. Boston Dynamics states plainly that Spot is not intended for individuals or home use.

Price: the dead sticker and the live quotes

There is no checkout price in 2026. The product page offers contact sales. The company FAQ says its robots are not intended for non-commercial individual purchase. shop.bostondynamics.com sells merchandise — hoodies, brick sets, plush Spots — not robots. Treat any site that claims to sell you a Spot for under six figures as a red flag until proven otherwise.

What buyers pay shows up in procurement and donation records. Honolulu's pandemic-era purchase was about $150,000. The LAPD accepted a donated unit valued at $277,917 in 2023. The NYPD paid roughly $750,000 for two units the same year — about $375,000 each if split evenly. Third-party integrators have floated unofficial estimates of a base near $75,000 rising past $120,000 with arm and enterprise software, plus annual software in the mid-teens of thousands; Boston Dynamics has not confirmed those numbers. Budget as a six-figure configured system with a support relationship attached.

What the machine does

Spot weighs about 33.8 kg with battery, tops out near 1.6 m/s, and averages roughly 90 minutes per swappable pack — payloads and environment shorten that. Continuous duty means a dock (about two hours to recharge) or spare batteries. Payload is up to 14 kg. Ingress rating is IP54. Operating range is roughly −20°C to 55°C. It handles about 30-degree slopes and steps up to 300 mm.

The optional arm is what turns inspection rounds into interaction: six degrees of freedom, about a metre of reach, lifts around 11 kg and can drag roughly 25 kg. The gripper carries a 4K camera and time-of-flight sensing for doors, valves and breakers. A Spot CAM+ style pan-tilt-zoom payload with optical zoom and radiometric thermal imaging is aimed at industrial inspection — Boston Dynamics highlighted refreshed camera options into 2026.

Software is the moat: Orbit, Autowalk, Gemini

Cheaper quadrupeds can walk. Spot's premium is the surrounding system. Orbit handles fleet scheduling, maps, live views, alerts and integrations; visual-inspection AI has been tied to Google's Gemini Robotics models. Autowalk lets an operator drive a route once, then repeats it with obstacle replanning and dock return. Boston Dynamics reported in early 2026 that autonomous door-opening had logged thousands of openings across beta customers. Developers get a mature Python SDK.

That stack is what utilities, factories and agencies are buying when they pay enterprise money: audited autonomy patterns, payload ecosystem, and a vendor path US institutions can procure from — not a gait video.

Who buys Spot

Named industrial users have included Purina, Michelin, National Grid, BMW, bp, POSCO, GlobalFoundries and Dominion Energy for inspection rounds. A unit has surveyed radiation in the Chornobyl exclusion zone for the UK Atomic Energy Authority. In 2026 FIFA's security apparatus has used Spots around World Cup broadcast and stadium perimeters. The pattern is repetitive patrol and inspection where sending a person is expensive, dull or dangerous.

Boston Dynamics has cited fleet counts in the thousands across Spot and Stretch combined in some communications; treat combined figures carefully when estimating Spot-only install base. The product page has also claimed 1,500+ robots in customer hands depending on the period — verify the current claim on the vendor page before citing it in a business case.

Police deployments and political pushback

The NYPD's "Digidog" is Spot. An early pilot was cancelled after backlash; Mayor Adams restored two units in 2023 funded from asset forfeiture. A city-council proposal nicknamed the ASIMOV Act has sought to bar NYPD robots capable of causing injury. Los Angeles accepted an LA Police Foundation donation (~$277,917 valuation) restricted to SWAT, hazmat and search-and-rescue — no weapons, no facial recognition — with multiple SWAT deployments reported since. Bloomberg reported in late 2025 that more than 60 bomb squads and SWAT teams across the US and Canada use Spot. Honolulu's unit has been reported as largely unused since 2021. No citywide Spot ban we could verify has taken effect; use remains contested.

July 2026: porch-gap delivery concept

On 14 July 2026 Boston Dynamics showed a logistics concept: Spot rides in a van with a conveyor payload holding two parcels, then walks the last stretch to the door. The company framed it as covering a large share of typical van packages and targeted pilots around 200 packages a day with a human driver — routes taught manually first, then repeated. No named carrier partner or commercial launch date was published. Treat it as a concept until a paid pilot publishes throughput and intervention rates.

Spot versus cheaper quadrupeds

Unitree Go2 starts at $1,600 (Air) / $2,800 (Pro) before tax and freight. Industrial Unitree B2-class machines often appear via resellers in the high five to low six figures. Deep Robotics Lite-class units commonly sit in the low-to-mid thousands depending on sensing. A configured Spot is one to two orders of magnitude above a Go2.

For hobby, education and many research budgets, the cheaper walking platforms are the rational choice. What Spot buys is Orbit, enterprise autonomy patterns, payloads, support contracts and procurement acceptability. A common framing is wrong: Unitree joined the same 2022 open letter against weaponising general-purpose robots that Boston Dynamics organised, alongside Agility Robotics and ANYbotics.

What Spot is not

• Not a pet or home robot — vendor policy and form factor both say no.
• Not rideable — 14 kg payload is for sensors and tools, not people.
• Not a weapon platform under Boston Dynamics terms — the company has cut off customers who tried to mount weapons.
• Not 24/7 without infrastructure — ~90-minute packs need docks or swaps.

Verdict

Spot is a real, deployed enterprise inspection and patrol tool with a software ecosystem that justifies a sales quote — if your job involves gas leaks, thermal anomalies, radiation surveys, bomb calls or similar high-stakes rounds. If you want a robot dog for a desk, a classroom or a research lab on a normal budget, you want a different machine and a different price band. Do not buy the silhouette. Buy the verified route, payload and support package.
